The Age of Smart Talking Interoperable Products

We are literally moving into the age of smart talking products, a new category of the Internet of Things given voice by the advent of Amazon’s Echo/Alexa, and now the newly introduced rival Google Home. And still to come, perhaps, an Apple Siri-enabled equivalent expected in the near future. The recent Google Home announcement drew a lot more attention to the emerging category, which has been called voice-activated or virtual personal assistants. Will HaaS Become The New SaaS?

WILL NEW BUSINESS MODELS DEFINE IOT’S FUTURE? Wall Street Journal reporter Christopher Mims did an insightful piece on IoT technology adoption a couple of weekends ago, entitled The Internet of Things Is Here, and It Isn’t a Thing. Mims astutely assessed: “The killer app of the Internet of Things isn’t a thing at all—it is services.” We couldn’t agree more. We actually think HaaS (Hardware as a Service) will become the new SaaS (Software as a Service) and is the future of connected consumer products. Connected Product Awareness Gets a Boost at Retail

Among the trends for 2016 that we predicted earlier this year was that Connected Product Awareness Would Grow. Now just after the mid-point of the year, we are beginning to see evidence that suggests consumer IoT products indeed are finally getting a boost in at least one critical venue: at retail. One indication of this happening can be seen at your local Best Buy. A year ago there were relatively few small in-store displays of IoT products to be found. Fast forward to today, and displays of smart lights, thermostats, video monitors, doorbells, and various other smart products abound in the […]

Consumer IoT Business Models: What We Can Learn From The Mobile Games Industry
